The evidence
Why map position matters for hospitality
Whatever the trade, customers search on a phone, look at the first few listings and act. These are published studies, linked so you can read them.
29–32%
of clicks go to the local map pack
On local service searches, the three map pack listings drew roughly a third of all clicks, more than any single organic result below them.
About this number
5,500+ testers chose a result on five San Francisco service-business searches. 28.8% with Local Services Ads shown, 32.3% without.
6–7×
more clicks for map pack #1 than #3
Position matters inside the pack, too. The first listing took 16–17% of clicks and the third took 2–3%.
About this number
Pack position 1: 16.1% (with LSAs) and 17.3% (without). Position 3: 2.3% and 2.9%.
50%
of smartphone searchers visited the store within a day
People who searched for a local business on a smartphone often acted that day. 18% of local searches led to a purchase within a day, against 7% of non-local searches.
About this number
4,500 survey respondents plus a smartphone search diary from 653 users. Behavior was self-reported or logged, and the study is more than a decade old.
81%
of consumers used Google to evaluate local businesses
Google remains where most people look before choosing a local business, which is why map visibility matters.
About this number
1,026 US adults on a representative panel. The report says Google's share was 87% in 2023, 81% in 2024, and rose again in 2025.
Figures come from the published studies linked on each card and reflect their samples, years and search types. They're shown as evidence that map position matters, not as a promise of results for any one business.

Why it matters
Local search is different for hospitality
Searches are hyper-local
"Pizza near me" is a different result on every block. A single rank number tells you almost nothing.
Visitors and locals search differently
People near your venue, and visitors near attractions or the airport, see different results. A grid shows both.
New spots open constantly
Track who's gaining ground around you after each opening.

What this tells you
Strong around the business and fading evenly with distance.
The green spots are where a customer searching right there sees you in Google's top 3. The red and grey ones are neighborhoods where you're losing the call to someone else.
What improvement looks like
From scattered visibility to owning the neighborhood
The goal of local SEO work is to turn red and amber spots green. A grid lets you see it happen. This is an illustration, not a customer result.

The playbook
How hospitality businesses use rank tracking
- 1
Check the blocks around you first
Use a tight 5 × 5 grid with a small radius to see your walking-distance visibility in detail.
- 2
Track occasions, not just cuisine
Brunch, date night, happy hour and your signature dish are separate searches with different competitors.
- 3
Watch new openings
When a new venue opens nearby, scan before and after to see whether it's taking your spots.
- 4
Compare locations
For groups, scan every venue on the same keywords to find the one that needs attention.

Where it comes from
Built by a local SEO agency, for the people who report on rankings every month.
LocalMapRanks was built by the team at Youtech Agency to track and explain local rankings for their own clients, then checked against what Google really shows at each location. It's the tool we wanted, so it measures things the way we'd defend them to a client.

Checked against the real pack
Positions 1 to 3 come from Google's actual local pack at each spot.

Hospitality rank tracking: common questions
Do I need a storefront to use it?
You need a Google Business Profile with a location. The grid is centered on it.
How often should I scan a restaurant or hotel?
Monthly is a good baseline. Scan weekly during a campaign or after a new competitor opens.
Can I track visitors and locals separately?
Yes. Run one scan centered on your venue and another with a wider radius to see how you show up farther away, around airports or attractions.
What's a token?
One token runs one spot of a scan. A 5×5 scan is 25 tokens and a 7×7 is 49 for each keyword. Spots that can't be checked are refunded automatically. Tokens never expire.
What do I get free?
Every new account gets 25 free tokens, enough for a complete 5×5 scan. No card needed.
