The evidence

Why map position matters for pet care

Whatever the trade, customers search on a phone, look at the first few listings and act. These are published studies, linked so you can read them.

29–32%

of clicks go to the local map pack

On local service searches, the three map pack listings drew roughly a third of all clicks, more than any single organic result below them.

About this number

5,500+ testers chose a result on five San Francisco service-business searches. 28.8% with Local Services Ads shown, 32.3% without.

BrightLocal Local Services Ads Click Study, 2018

6–7×

more clicks for map pack #1 than #3

Position matters inside the pack, too. The first listing took 16–17% of clicks and the third took 2–3%.

About this number

Pack position 1: 16.1% (with LSAs) and 17.3% (without). Position 3: 2.3% and 2.9%.

BrightLocal Local Services Ads Click Study, 2018

50%

of smartphone searchers visited the store within a day

People who searched for a local business on a smartphone often acted that day. 18% of local searches led to a purchase within a day, against 7% of non-local searches.

About this number

4,500 survey respondents plus a smartphone search diary from 653 users. Behavior was self-reported or logged, and the study is more than a decade old.

Google, Ipsos and Purchased, 2014

81%

of consumers used Google to evaluate local businesses

Google remains where most people look before choosing a local business, which is why map visibility matters.

About this number

1,026 US adults on a representative panel. The report says Google's share was 87% in 2023, 81% in 2024, and rose again in 2025.

BrightLocal Local Consumer Review Survey, 2025 edition (2024 figure)

Figures come from the published studies linked on each card and reflect their samples, years and search types. They're shown as evidence that map position matters, not as a promise of results for any one business.

Why it matters

Local search is different for pet care

Proximity wins

Nobody drives across town to groom a dog. Your visibility within a few miles decides your bookings.

Emergencies and urgency

A sick pet or a last-minute boarding need turns into a search and a call. Being in the top 3 is the difference.

Reviews decide the close calls

Pet owners compare ratings closely. See how yours compare with the businesses that beat you.

What this tells you

Strongest to the north-east, fading toward the south-west where competitors take the top spots.

The green spots are where a customer searching right there sees you in Google's top 3. The red and grey ones are neighborhoods where you're losing the call to someone else.

What improvement looks like

From scattered visibility to owning the neighborhood

The goal of local SEO work is to turn red and amber spots green. A grid lets you see it happen. This is an illustration, not a customer result.

The playbook

How pet care businesses use rank tracking

  1. 1

    Map where your customers live

Pet owners choose close. Scan around your location to see which neighborhoods find you.

  2. 2

    Track each service

Grooming, vaccines, boarding and daycare each have different competitors.

  3. 3

Compare reviews with the shops that beat you

Check your rating and review count against competitors in the top 3.

  4. 4

    Re-scan after campaigns

Run a scan before a promotion and after to see what changed.

What you'll learn about your pet care visibility

  • Where your customers live

Map the neighborhoods that find you, and the ones that find someone else.

  • Service by service

Track grooming, vaccines and boarding as separate searches.

  • Multi-location view

Compare clinics or shops across a group on the same grid.

Where it comes from

Built by a local SEO agency, for the people who report on rankings every month.

LocalMapRanks was built by the team at Youtech Agency to track and explain local rankings for their own clients, then checked against what Google really shows at each location. It's the tool we wanted, so it measures things the way we'd defend them to a client.

Pet care rank tracking: common questions

How far out should I scan?

For a groomer or boarding facility, 2 to 5 miles is usually where most customers come from. You can choose the radius for each scan.

Can I track a group of clinics?

Yes. Add each clinic as its own business and compare them.

Does it show who I'm up against?

Yes. Every scan lists the competitors that appear around you, with their average rank, rating and reviews.

What's a token?

One token runs one spot of a scan. A 5×5 scan is 25 tokens and a 7×7 is 49 for each keyword. Spots that can't be checked are refunded automatically. Tokens never expire.

What do I get free?

Every new account gets 25 free tokens, enough for a complete 5×5 scan. No card needed.
