The evidence
Why map position matters for home services
Whatever the trade, customers search on a phone, look at the first few listings and act. These are published studies, linked so you can read them.
29–32%
of clicks go to the local map pack
On local service searches, the three map pack listings drew roughly a third of all clicks, more than any single organic result below them.
About this number
5,500+ testers chose a result on five San Francisco service-business searches. 28.8% with Local Services Ads shown, 32.3% without.
6–7×
more clicks for map pack #1 than #3
Position matters inside the pack, too. The first listing took 16–17% of clicks and the third took 2–3%.
About this number
Pack position 1: 16.1% (with LSAs) and 17.3% (without). Position 3: 2.3% and 2.9%.
50%
of smartphone searchers visited the store within a day
People who searched for a local business on a smartphone often acted that day. 18% of local searches led to a purchase within a day, against 7% of non-local searches.
About this number
4,500 survey respondents plus a smartphone search diary from 653 users. Behavior was self-reported or logged, and the study is more than a decade old.
81%
of consumers used Google to evaluate local businesses
Google remains where most people look before choosing a local business, which is why map visibility matters.
About this number
1,026 US adults on a representative panel. The report says Google's share was 87% in 2023, 81% in 2024, and rose again in 2025.
Figures come from the published studies linked on each card and reflect their samples, years and search types. They're shown as evidence that map position matters, not as a promise of results for any one business.

Local rank tracking for every kind of home services business
HVAC
AC and heating jobs are won in the first search, usually in a heat wave or a cold snap. See which neighborhoods you own and which you lose to the next company over.

Plumbing
Plumbing is an emergency business. Customers call whoever shows up first, so the top three matter more than anything. Map exactly where you're in them.

Lawn care
Lawn care runs on route density. Visibility in tight clusters of neighborhoods is worth more than a thin spread across town.

Pest control
Pest problems are urgent and local. Customers call the first company they see, so being in the local pack on their street is the whole game.

Why it matters
Local search is different for home services
Emergency searches don't wait
A homeowner with a broken AC or a burst pipe searches once and calls one of the first three results. If you're #7 on their street, that call never reaches you.
Service areas are wider than your ranking
You'll drive 15 miles for a job, but Google may only show you to people within 3. Find out exactly where the gap is.
More competitors every year
New listings and lead-gen sites crowd the map. Tracking tells you early when someone starts taking your area.

What this tells you
Strong around the business and fading evenly with distance.
The green spots are where a customer searching right there sees you in Google's top 3. The red and grey ones are neighborhoods where you're losing the call to someone else.
What improvement looks like
From scattered visibility to owning the neighborhood
The goal of local SEO work is to turn red and amber spots green. A grid lets you see it happen. This is an illustration, not a customer result.

The playbook
How home services businesses use rank tracking
- 1
Find the gaps in your service area
Run a 7 × 7 grid on your main service. The red and grey spots are neighborhoods you serve but customers can't find you in.
- 2
Work the weakest high-value areas first
Prioritise neighborhoods with the best jobs. Local pages, reviews from customers in that area and consistent business listings all help there.
- 3
Track each service separately
Plumbing, drain cleaning and water heaters each have their own competitors. Scan each one so you know which service to push.
- 4
Re-scan on a schedule and prove it
Scan monthly and compare. Share the maps with your team or client so the work shows up as a visible change.
What you'll learn about your home services visibility
Your real service area
Map where you appear in the top 3 versus where you only think you do.
Each service on its own
Track plumber, drain cleaning and water heater separately. Visibility differs by service.
Seasonal tracking
Scan before each busy season and compare, so you can see whether the work is paying off.
Where it comes from
Built by a local SEO agency, for the people who report on rankings every month.
LocalMapRanks was built by the team at Youtech Agency to track and explain local rankings for their own clients, then checked against what Google really shows at each location. It's the tool we wanted, so it measures things the way we'd defend them to a client.

Home services rank tracking: common questions
How is this different from checking my ranking on Google?
A normal check shows one location. Local results change with the searcher's position, so you can be first on one street and missing two miles away. A grid shows every area at once.
Does it work for service-area businesses without a storefront?
Yes. The grid is centered on the location of your listing and extends out to the radius you choose, so you can see how far your visibility reaches.
How many tokens does a scan use?
One token per spot: 25 for a 5 × 5 grid, 49 for a 7 × 7, per keyword. New accounts get 25 free tokens.
What's a token?
One token runs one spot of a scan. A 5×5 scan is 25 tokens and a 7×7 is 49 for each keyword. Spots that can't be checked are refunded automatically. Tokens never expire.
What do I get free?
Every new account gets 25 free tokens, enough for a complete 5×5 scan. No card needed.
