The evidence

Why map position matters for legal

Whatever the trade, customers search on a phone, look at the first few listings and act. These are published studies, linked so you can read them.

29–32%

of clicks go to the local map pack

On local service searches, the three map pack listings drew roughly a third of all clicks, more than any single organic result below them.

About this number

5,500+ testers chose a result on five San Francisco service-business searches. 28.8% with Local Services Ads shown, 32.3% without.

BrightLocal Local Services Ads Click Study, 2018

6–7×

more clicks for map pack #1 than #3

Position matters inside the pack, too. The first listing took 16–17% of clicks and the third took 2–3%.

About this number

Pack position 1: 16.1% (with LSAs) and 17.3% (without). Position 3: 2.3% and 2.9%.

BrightLocal Local Services Ads Click Study, 2018

50%

of smartphone searchers visited the store within a day

People who searched for a local business on a smartphone often acted that day. 18% of local searches led to a purchase within a day, against 7% of non-local searches.

About this number

4,500 survey respondents plus a smartphone search diary from 653 users. Behavior was self-reported or logged, and the study is more than a decade old.

Google, Ipsos and Purchased, 2014

81%

of consumers used Google to evaluate local businesses

Google remains where most people look before choosing a local business, which is why map visibility matters.

About this number

1,026 US adults on a representative panel. The report says Google's share was 87% in 2023, 81% in 2024, and rose again in 2025.

BrightLocal Local Consumer Review Survey, 2025 edition (2024 figure)

Figures come from the published studies linked on each card and reflect their samples, years and search types. They're shown as evidence that map position matters, not as a promise of results for any one business.

Why it matters

Local search is different for legal

High-value, high-competition

One signed case can pay for months of marketing. Visibility in the right areas is worth knowing precisely.

Multiple offices, multiple markets

Each office competes in a different city. Scan and compare them.

A clear PDF shows partners where the firm stands and what's improving.

What this tells you

Strongest to the north-west, fading toward the south-east where competitors take the top spots.

The green spots are where a customer searching right there sees you in Google's top 3. The red and grey ones are neighborhoods where you're losing the call to someone else.

What improvement looks like

From scattered visibility to owning the neighborhood

The goal of local SEO work is to turn red and amber spots green. A grid lets you see it happen. This is an illustration, not a customer result.

The playbook

How legal businesses use rank tracking

  1. 1

    Scan each practice area

Personal injury, family law and criminal defense have different competitors and different map shapes. Track each separately.

  2. 2

Find the neighborhoods where another firm owns the map

Look at the competitor table to see who appears in the top 3 where you don't.

  3. 3

Tie it to content and reviews

Build location and practice-area pages and earn reviews, then re-scan to see whether visibility moved.

  4. 4

    Report to partners

Export a plain-English PDF for the partners each month.

What you'll learn about your legal visibility

  • Practice area by practice area

Track each service line on its own. Rankings differ a lot between them.

  • Which firms own which areas

See the competitors that appear in the top 3 where you don't.

  • Return on content and links

Measure whether new work moves your map visibility.

Where it comes from

Built by a local SEO agency, for the people who report on rankings every month.

LocalMapRanks was built by the team at Youtech Agency to track and explain local rankings for their own clients, then checked against what Google really shows at each location. It's the tool we wanted, so it measures things the way we'd defend them to a client.

Legal rank tracking: common questions

Can I track more than one office?

Yes. Add each office as its own business and scan it on the same keywords so you can compare offices.

Why would a competing firm outrank me in some areas?

Google says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence. Distance is measured from where the person searching is standing, which is why your rank changes from block to block.

Is the data specific to my practice area?

Yes. You choose the keywords, so you can track "car accident lawyer" and "truck accident lawyer" separately and see how each performs.

What's a token?

One token runs one spot of a scan. A 5×5 scan is 25 tokens and a 7×7 is 49 for each keyword. Spots that can't be checked are refunded automatically. Tokens never expire.

What do I get free?

Every new account gets 25 free tokens, enough for a complete 5×5 scan. No card needed.
