The evidence
Why map position matters for landscaping
Customers glance at the first few listings and act. These are published studies, linked so you can read them.
29–32%
of clicks go to the local map pack
On local service searches, the three map pack listings drew roughly a third of all clicks, more than any single organic result below them.
About this number
5,500+ testers chose a result on five San Francisco service-business searches. 28.8% with Local Services Ads shown, 32.3% without.
6–7×
more clicks for map pack #1 than #3
Position matters inside the pack, too. The first listing took 16–17% of clicks and the third took 2–3%.
About this number
Pack position 1: 16.1% (with LSAs) and 17.3% (without). Position 3: 2.3% and 2.9%.
50%
of smartphone searchers visited the store within a day
People who searched for a local business on a smartphone often acted that day. 18% of local searches led to a purchase within a day, against 7% of non-local searches.
About this number
4,500 survey respondents plus a smartphone search diary from 653 users. Behavior was self-reported or logged, and the study is more than a decade old.
81%
of consumers used Google to evaluate local businesses
Google remains where most people look before choosing a local business, which is why map visibility matters.
About this number
1,026 US adults on a representative panel. The report says Google's share was 87% in 2023, 81% in 2024, and rose again in 2025.
Figures come from the published studies linked on each card and reflect their samples, years and search types. They're shown as evidence that map position matters, not as a promise of results for any one business.

What this tells you
Strongest to the south-east, fading toward the north-west where competitors take the top spots.
The green spots are where a customer searching right there sees you in Google's top 3. The red and grey ones are neighborhoods where you're losing the call to someone else.
When customers search
The moments that bring in landscaping customers
Local searches are driven by what's happening in the moment. Being in the top 3 when it does is what wins the call.
Moment 1
Spring planning for a new yard or patio
Moment 2
A new home purchase
Moment 3
Prepping a property to sell

Where the clicks go
Position on the map decides who gets the click
On local searches, the map pack draws a large share of clicks, and the first listing far more than the third.

The playbook
How landscaping businesses use rank tracking
- 1
Find the gaps in your service area
Run a 7 × 7 grid on your main service. The red and grey spots are neighborhoods you serve but customers can't find you in.
- 2
Work the weakest high-value areas first
Prioritise neighborhoods with the best jobs. Local pages, reviews from customers in that area and consistent business listings all help there.
- 3
Track each service separately
Plumbing, drain cleaning and water heaters each have their own competitors. Scan each one so you know which service to push.
- 4
Re-scan on a schedule and prove it
Scan monthly and compare. Share the maps with your team or client so the work shows up as a visible change.
Where it comes from
Built by a local SEO agency, for the people who report on rankings every month.
LocalMapRanks was built by the team at Youtech Agency to track and explain local rankings for their own clients, then checked against what Google really shows at each location. It's the tool we wanted, so it measures things the way we'd defend them to a client.

Landscaping rank tracking: common questions
Why does landscaping visibility vary by neighborhood?
Google says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence. Distance is measured from where the person searching is standing, which is why your rank changes from block to block.
Should I track design and maintenance separately?
Yes. Design and installation are different searches from routine maintenance, with different competitors and customers.
What exactly is a grid scan?
We pick a grid of points around your business (3×3, 5×5 or 7×7) out to a radius you choose. At each point we ask Google what someone standing there would see when they search your keyword, and record where you rank. The result is a map of your visibility, block by block.
What's a token?
One token runs one spot of a scan. A 5×5 scan is 25 tokens and a 7×7 is 49 for each keyword. Spots that can't be checked are refunded automatically. Tokens never expire.
